Expectations

My expectations
 snatch away each day as it comes
and deny me the present
by promising the future.

The greatest obstacles to joyful living
are my expectations,
which hang upon tomorrow
and lose today.

Expectations arrange what lies in fortune’s control,
abandoning what lies in mine.

What am I looking at?
To what goal am I straining?
The future lies in uncertainty;
I need to live now.

I must match time’s pace
with my focus on using it;
I must drink
as though from a stream
that will not always flow.

Besides,
expectations are the greatest source of
unhappiness.
